Bathroom cleaning challenges don’t have to involve grout, or the porous substance that keeps your tiles in place. Grout preservation not only contributes to a clean bathroom, but it prevents mold and mildew from forming and causing allergy and asthma flareups. Here are a few tips for protecting grout on your bathroom walls and floor.

How to Maintain Bathroom Tile Grout

1. Clean Regularly With Water

Clean bathroom grout using warm water and a small scrub brush, such as a toothbrush. Water has a neutral pH and won’t degrade the material, unlike cleansers with high acid or alkaline content. Let the hot water run in your shower or tub for about five minutes to loosen grime before scrubbing.

2. Use Baking Soda

You can also make a paste out of baking soda and water to clean soap scum and mildew. Don’t use bleach to whiten grout and kill mold since bleach causes discolorations.

3. Use Area Rugs & a Broom

Protect bathroom tile on your floor with area rugs. Apply them in strategic locations, such as in front of the vanity and tub to minimize foot traffic-related grime.

Sweep the flooring about once a week to remove dirt and debris, and use a damp mop with a neutral cleanser for deep cleaning. Never add a lot of water to a tile floor. The liquid becomes dirty as you clean and could result in grout stains.

4. Apply Sealant

Seal tile floors and walls as part of bathroom cleaning. Apply the product according to manufacturer instructions about once a year.

However, biannual applications might be necessary, depending on how many people live in your home. Sealant creates a barrier between the grout and grime to keep it clean.

5. Lower the Humidity Level

Add a dehumidifier to your bathroom and keep windows open whenever possible to control the room’s moisture level. The drier the bathroom is, the fewer chances mold and mildew have to develop on grout. Keep the humidity in the room and the rest of your home between 30 and 50% to discourage mold growth.
