There are four main types of brakes that your car or truck might have. They all work to stop your car, but function differently. It’s good to know how your brakes work in case you need to have your car picked up by a tow truck. Here’s a guide to how each braking system works.

What Are the Types of Car Brakes?

1. Disc

Disc brakes are the most common way your vehicle stops on the road. They’re more likely to be installed in your car than drum brakes as they’re more efficient. They stop your car by using a rotor attached directly to the wheel. The brake pads near the rotors are squeezed, and the friction between the rotor and the pads causes your car to come to a complete stop.

2. Drum

Drum brakes are an alternative to disc brakes. They’re less common but are still used on some vehicles. Your drum brake is attached to the inside of the wheel. When the brake pedal is pushed, there is hydraulic pressure that presses the brake shoes down against the wheel drum. It’s the friction between these parts that causes your car to slow down or stop.

3. Emergency

In a dire situation, it can be pulled to help stop your car. However, it’s most commonly used while parking your car to keep it in place, especially if you’re parked on a hill or incline. They’re powered by cables that apply pressure to the wheels. The emergency brake can be found in many different places, including as a third pedal on the floor, a stick lever on the center console, a button you push, or a handle near the steering wheel.

4. Anti-Lock

Anti-lock brakes (ABS) aren’t present in all vehicles, but they’re an important safety measure to consider for your next vehicle. They prevent skidding by stopping the wheels from locking up. This is especially useful in a severe rainstorm or on slippery roads. If your car doesn’t have ABS, you might be more likely to need the service of a tow truck in these conditions.
