The alternator works with the battery and voltage regulator to create the energy a car needs to run. Since it’s a moving part, it’s subject to wear and tear. When this component fails, your vehicle will experience performance issues and require auto repair. Here are a few signs you should head to a mechanic to have this part inspected.

What Happens When an Alternator Malfunctions?

1. Warning Lights

Most modern cars have electrical sensors that alert drivers to problems, including low tire pressure, overheating, and oil leaks.

If your dashboard lights up with a message that reads “ALT” (alternator) or “GEN” (generator), the system has detected an issue with the alternator. An older model might only display a generic “Check Engine” warning, so an auto repair technician will run a diagnostic test to discover the problem.

2. Unusual Noises

When an alternator malfunctions, it typically generates excessive noise during operation.

For example, a loose belt can slip on the alternator pulley, causing a squealing sound. Alternatively, a worn or broken bearing might come in contact with the rotor as it spins, creating a grinding noise.

3. Electrical Troubles

Auto RepairSince the alternator generates the electricity a vehicle needs as it drives, electrical components can experience issues when it fails.

For example, the radio might shut off on its own and the windows may operate slowly. The lack of a steady power supply also causes the headlights to dim gradually or flicker, creating unsafe driving conditions.

4. Battery Issues

Without a functioning alternator, the battery won’t recharge while driving, so it drains at an accelerated rate.

A jump-start is often sufficient to restart a dead battery. However, if problems persist even after you replace this component, the alternator is the most likely culprit. The battery might drain quickly until this auto part is repaired or replaced.
