Insulin, vaccines, and pharmaceuticals derived from blood plasma are extremely sensitive to temperature changes. Even short-term exposure to ambient temperatures can render many of these life-saving drugs unsafe or ineffective. Luckily, pharmacy refrigerators keep products safe when used according to protocol. If you manage a pharmacy, here are a few ways to preserve refrigerated items.

Pharmacy Guidelines for Refrigerated Medication

1. Invest in the Proper Equipment

Standard refrigeration equipment isn’t sufficient for storing drugs, as most refrigerators don’t maintain consistent temperatures throughout.

Most refrigerated drugs have a very narrow temperature threshold, between 5 and 8 degrees Celsius. Pharmacy refrigerators have special fans that eliminate inconsistencies and ensure the front of the box is the same temperature as the back. They also feature maximum/minimum thermostats to give you more control over temperatures.

2. Stow Products Upon Arrival

Staff members must check and unpack medications as soon as they’re delivered. Upon receipt, the pharmacist should also check the paperwork to confirm that materials were kept cold during every step of the distribution process.

3. Pack the Refrigerator Correctly

Packing items too closely can restrict airflow in the fridge, causing the temperature of products to rise even when the equipment works correctly.

Avoid stacking and don’t let items touch one another in storage. Don’t use the fridge floor for storage, and keep any temperature gauges between items instead of the door for correct readings.
