Here are three suggestions that may help you avoid pain and injuries in your back.

How to Avoid Backaches & Injuries

1. Move Around Regularly

Prolonged periods of inactivity can put enormous strain on your back and neck. You may develop poor posture that grows worse throughout the day. Make a habit of getting up several times throughout the day and walking around to minimize pressure on your back. Check your chair, too; it’s best to sit in an ergonomic style featuring substantial back support and an adjustable seat so that you can place your feet firmly on the ground, helping you avoid discomfort. 

2. Watch Your Posture

back painPoor posture may be to blame for your chronic back pain. It often happens unknowingly, usually, while you’re hard at work at your desk or sitting on the couch. Slouching puts your spine in an unnatural position, and could more specifically put intense pressure on the lumbar discs when you’re seated. Be mindful of how you sit and stand, and focus intently on maintaining an aligned back. It may feel unusual at first, but it will pay off in helping you avoid back pain.

3. Change Sleeping Positions

The way that you sleep can also affect how your back feels during the day. If you normally sleep on your back, for example, create a more supportive environment by putting a pillow underneath your knees or rolling a towel under your back. That stabilizes the lower back’s curve for greater comfort. Or turn on your side instead. Pull your legs slightly upward and place a pillow between your knees to minimize pressure on the back. Although sleeping on the stomach can exacerbate your back pain, you can minimize it by putting pillows beneath your abdomen and head.
