If you’re facing a charge of driving while intoxicated, you stand to lose a lot. A DWI conviction doesn’t just result in repercussions like financial penalties and loss of driving rights, but it also limits your mobility in other ways. Here’s a closer look at how your ability to travel internationally may be impacted if you’re found guilty.

How a DWI Impacts Your International Travel

There are many countries where you can still travel freely with a DWI or DUI conviction, and there are no restrictions within the United States. You also should not have trouble getting into the Dominican Republic, India, or the European Union, to name just a few.

However, certain countries ban U.S. travelers who have been convicted of a DWI. If you’ve been convicted of driving while intoxicated in the past 10 years, you’ll be denied entry into Canada and Mexico, for instance. If you have a conviction within the last five years, you’ll be denied entry into New Zealand. If you received a sentence of more than 12 months, you won’t be allowed into Australia.

DWISome countries don’t have legislation in place prohibiting entry to those with a DWI conviction, but this black mark can prove problematic nonetheless. Predominantly Muslim nations like the United Arab Emirates, for example, forbid alcohol consumption in general under Islamic Law. Having a drunk driving record is thus sure to be viewed negatively.

What You Can Do if You Have a Conviction on Your Record

There are steps you can take to gain access to a country that doesn’t welcome those with a DWI. To get into Canada, for example, you can petition the Canadian Government for forgiveness of a prior conviction. If they declare you criminally rehabilitated, you will be fine to plan your trip. Alternatively, you can apply for a temporary resident permit to gain entry. An attorney can advise on the best course of action, depending on where you need to go.
