Washing your car can help your paint job and auto glass look like your vehicle just rolled off the dealer lot. However, your technique can make all the difference. Not following the proper steps could leave your car looking worse than when you started—or even cause accidental damage. Here’s a closer look at how to wash a car, including what you should avoid.

Do:

Have two separate buckets for washing.

For a thorough car wash, most people use a sponge that they can dip into a bucket of sudsy water and then scrub the surface. If you just use a single bucket, however, that water will get dirty quickly, filling with dirt and debris that could scratch the paint. Use a separate bucket for rinsing the dirty sponge so the suds bucket can stay clean.

Towel-dry with care.

For drying, use a microfiber towel, which is less abrasive and more absorbent than other materials. Rather than vigorously rubbing the towel across the vehicle surface, gently pat it on the auto glass and paint, letting it soak up water before pulling it away. This makes you less likely to accidentally scratch the paint.

Don’t:

Wash your car in sunlight.

Forget the interior.

The exterior gets most of the attention, but your interior will need some work, too. Vacuum seats and under floor mats, and treat the seats with a cloth or leather cleaner. Don’t forget to clean the inside of your car windows, where fingerprints and other markings often accumulate.
