Metal is a strong material that can last for decades When utilized for roofing, it provides a strong, stable barrier between the inside of your home and the elements. However, it is important to practice proper maintenance to keep it in good shape.  Here are four do’s and don’ts to consider if you recently installed metal roofing

Do:

Clear branches away

Metal is smoother than other roofing materials, so it is more susceptible to scratches. Tree branches that accumulate on the surface of your metal roofing can damage the surface. Debris can also get stuck between metal sheets, potentially casing additional damage. To safely clear branches away, use a long, bristled brush to gently dislodge the debris.

Repair holes

Metal RoofingEven the smallest holes can turn into a leak, especially in harsh weather conditions. Depending on the extent of the hole, a waterproof roof caulk or sealant can be used for repair. Larger holes should be inspected by a professional roofing company.

Don’t:

Walk on it regularly

Walking on top of your metal roofing is sometimes necessary for repairs and maintenance. While it is safe to walk on with the proper gripping footwear and safety harnesses, too much traffic can cause scratches and dents. To prevent this, follow the guidelines given by the manufacturer about how often you should be walking on your roof.

Let debris accumulate in gutters

Despite the season, debris such as tree branches, leaves, and dirt tend to accumulate in the gutters. If they are not cleaned regularly, this debris prevents water from properly draining from the roof to the ground. This back-up of water may cause leaks or metal corrosion if left alone. Most roofing companies recommend cleaning the gutters twice per year to keep this from happening.
