Puppies are full of energy and enthusiasm, but they require plenty of sleep for healthy growth. Sometimes they won’t listen to their internal clocks when it’s time for bed because they’re stimulated by items and activities surrounding them, but puppy training will help them ease into a comfortable nighttime ritual. Your furry family member will have an easier time dreaming the night away once you master the following tips.

How to Train Your Puppy for a Full Night’s Rest

1. Set Up a Cozy Crate

An important goal to achieve with puppy training is getting them to sleep in their crate. It’ll be easier if you make it an inviting environment for them. Instead of splurging on a dog bed they’ll easily chew up, lay out a soft blanket on the bottom of the crate for them to relax on. You should also give them a soft toy to keep them entertained or chew on if they’re teething. Puppies sleep easier knowing their family is close by, so place their crate in your bedroom until they’re comfortable snoozing on their own.

2. Establish a Routine

3. Leave Them Undisturbed

While it’s tempting to cozy up with your furry one during bedtime, it’s important to train your puppy not to be dependent on you to fall asleep. There’ll be some whining and whimpering while they adjust to their new routine. But, unless they need to go to the bathroom, wait out the fussing until they fall asleep.

4. Provide Lots of Exercise

Exercise isn’t just important for your dog’s physical health. Active playtime and movement throughout the day will tire them out and make them ready for sleep at bedtime. Along with physical activities like playing catch in the backyard or taking a walk around the block, give your puppy mental exercises by using an interactive feeder to distribute snacks.
