Dust is an inevitable part of working with lumber and building materials. It can dirty the rest of your home during a remodeling project, so it’s essential to get it under control at the outset. Luckily, there are many easy, affordable ways to set up a clean workspace.

How to Control Dust During Construction

1. Hang Plastic Sheets

Large plastic sheets are a cheap, versatile way to manage dust. Lay them over exposed flooring and walkways before you begin. Hang them over walls or use them to create partitions between rooms and the workspace.

These sheets will contain dust while you cut lumber, drywall, and other materials. When you’re finished, simply roll them up and move the dust outside without spilling any.

2. Lay Down Builder’s Paper

Builder’s paper is ideal if you’re working on or around carpets, such as replacing drywall in a room. Line these areas with this durable craft construction paper the same way you would with plastic sheets.

lumberYou can also install it on walkways to capture dust that may be stuck on your work boots. It comes in large, rolled sheets that can be cut to size and is 100% recycled, making it an excellent green building material.

3. Use a Wet/Dry Vacuum & Fans

Wet/dry vacuum cleaners are a valuable tool for construction cleanup. If you’re working in tight spaces, use this tool to suck up dust and then empty it outside. It’s a better solution than a standard vacuum because its increased power can suck up and hold a significant number of fine particles, such as wood shavings or drywall dust.

Another idea is to place box fans in your open windows. Turn them on to suck dust out of the air and deposit it safely outside.
