Asphalt is commonly used for residential driveways because it’s incredibly durable; however, it’s still prone to damage. Caring for your asphalt paving will help maximize its life span and maintain its function. Here are a few tips to ensure you get the most out of your new installation.

How to Care for an Asphalt Driveway

1. Let It Cure

Asphalt must have time to set—this period allows the material to bond and harden. Wait at least three days after the installation to drive on the surface.

Although you can use the driveway, don’t park heavy vehicles or work machinery on it. Asphalt can take anywhere from six to twelve months to cure completely, so follow the instructions laid out by your driveway installer to avoid inhibiting the process.

2. Reposition the Downspout

If the downspout releases liquid onto the asphalt paving, it can cause extensive moisture damage over the years. Reposition the spout so that water is dispersed elsewhere and avoids the driveway completely.

3. Seal the Surface

Wait at least 90 days to ensure the asphalt paving has cured enough to accept a sealcoat. This formula will protect the surface from moisture damage, preventing cracks and potholes. After the initial application, reseal the driveway every two to three years to maintain the barrier.

Like all materials, the surface will eventually degrade with age. When it’s time to replace your driveway, turn to Prefer Paving & Ready-Mix in Rush City, MN.
