There are numerous species of wasps in the U.S., and yellow jackets are among the most recognizable. It’s essential to understand their unique qualities to identify and address their presence on your property. Use the helpful pest control guide below to protect yourself and your family.

Recognizing Wasps & Yellow Jackets

Physical Appearance

Yellow jackets, part of the wasp family, have black bodies and yellow and white horizontal stripes. They’re smaller than other wasp species, ranging between 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long. But they’re bulkier with tiny waists. These insects also have no hair since they don’t harvest pollen like bees. Instead, they appear smooth and shiny.

Other wasp species vary in description, though most are brownish. The paper wasp, often mistaken for a yellow jacket, is brownish with yellow and red markings. On average, species range between 1/4 to 1 inch long. All wasps have stingers.

Nesting Areas

pest-control-daytonMany wasps nest in trees, sheds, garages, and the edges of roofs. Their nests are made of chewed wood pulp and saliva and are about the size of a golf ball. Over time, they’ll grow to accommodate more wasps.

Yellow jackets are unique because they nest underground to avoid detection. They may also reside in holes in walls. Nests can hold thousands of insects and are easier to disturb. You're more likely to step on one of these underground nests than bump into one that hangs off a tree or roofline.

Behavior

Yellow jackets forage within one mile of their nest. They’re attracted to proteins and sugars, which is why you’ll find them buzzing around your backyard picnic. These insects are extremely aggressive and will swarm to defend their colony. Unlike bees, they can sting multiple times, making them particularly dangerous.

Other wasp species, on the other hand, are more defensive and will only attack when their nests are disturbed.
