Gutters are an essential component of your roofing system. They ensure that water is drained away from your property, but they can become clogged and dirty from leaves, debris, and more. When you have aluminum gutters, there are certain steps to take to protect them and keep the system in top shape. Below is a guide to follow.

How to Maintain Aluminum Gutters

1. Place the Ladder

You will need a ladder to reach aluminum gutters, but where you place it is important. Lean the ladder against an area near a nail since this is one of the strongest points on the system. Putting stress on other sections can lead to damage and even crashes.

If possible, avoid putting the ladder on the gutters altogether and lean it on the house. Keep moving the ladder as you clean so you are close to the work area and safe.

2. Remove Debris

With work gloves on, reach in and scoop out any leaves or debris accumulation inside the aluminum gutters. Use a garden trowel or make your own with an empty plastic bottle to get inside and remove stuck grime. Be careful as you scoop near joints so you don’t loosen connections. Set up a garbage can for easy dumping.

3. Send in Water

4. Clean the Outside

Spray the exterior to rinse away dirt. Approach this step in small 5-foot sections so they remain wet for the next step. With a gutter cleaner, spray each section, and for mildew stains, use a bleach cleaner before rinsing with fresh water. Avoid abrasives, ammonia, and paint remover that can damage the metal.

5. Scrub a Little

Some stains may need a little scrubbing. Use a non-metal, rough-bristled brush on aluminum gutters that will effectively remove grime without scraping or damaging the metal surface. Do not scrub aggressively, especially on joints. Rinse everything off one final time to clear away dirt and cleaner residue.
