If you ever get a flat tire or are involved in a fender bender, you might need a tow truck to get home. While you wait for help to arrive, you should make sure you’re safe. The following practices will help you get back on the road without a hassle.

Do:

Get away from traffic.

If it’s possible to move your vehicle, try to get it away from the flow of traffic and onto the shoulder of the road. This reduces the risk of getting hit by another driver while waiting for the tow truck.

Only get out to push the vehicle if traffic conditions allow it. If you’re on the side of a busy highway, wait until there aren’t any other cars around. Put the car in neutral and push it slowly off the pavement. In especially busy areas, it might be safer to stay inside until help arrives.

Turn on hazard lights.

Signaling to others that you’re stranded will help them know to drive with caution. At the very least, turn on the hazard lights.

Don’t:

Leave behind personal belongings.

In some situations, the safest option is to leave the vehicle while waiting for help. If the car starts smoking or is in a precarious spot, find a safe place away from it.

Gather personal valuables like your wallet and insurance card. This ensures you’ll have everything together when the tow truck arrives. Take note of the vehicle’s location and keep the service updated on your whereabouts.

Accept rides from anyone besides the towing company.

Unfortunately, not everyone who stops to ask if you need help has good intentions. Only accept a ride from the towing company that you called or a uniformed highway patrol officer.

Stay inside with the doors locked if someone you don’t know approaches. If they ask if you need help, tell them to call the police.
