In most houses, the windows are often the last feature to be updated. This isn’t always an issue as they’re durable and made to withstand the effects of nature and time. However, over time, they can start to lose their effectiveness. If your installations start to exhibit any of the following signs, it may be time to replace them.

How to Tell When Windows Need Replacing

1. Drafty Frames

Outdated windows aren’t efficient at preventing air from moving between the inside and outside of the home. When they allow air to flow through, it can make it difficult to keep the house at a comfortable temperature in the middle of winter or summer.

This constant temperature fluctuation will put extra strain on the HVAC system, making it harder to heat or cool the home. The system will have to run for longer periods to reach the desired temperature, increasing your monthly energy bills.

2. Poor Insulation

windowsMany older homes have their original windows that weren’t made with the superior insulating technology that’s available today. These houses are likely always susceptible to outside noises in addition to fluctuating temperatures.

Even today’s lowest cost windows are made with thick, double-paned glass that blocks and absorbs sound waves to reduce the amount of noise flowing into the home. Glass with a high sound transmission class (STC) and vinyl frames can block most outside sounds from interrupting your home life.

3. Foggy Glass

When the outdoor cold air meets warm interior air, condensation can begin to form on glass panes. This is a normal problem, but when it starts to happen frequently, it could signal that a window has been damaged.

A crack in the glass could allow air to enter more easily, resulting in moisture accumulation. If the seal between the panes is damaged, condensation can form between the glass and will drastically reduce how effective your windows are at preventing heat transfer.
