Every electrical outlet is either grounded or ungrounded. If your home was built after 1960, it probably features grounded outlets throughout the structure. Here’s what homeowners should know about grounded outlets and why they should have an electrician switch out any ungrounded ones in the home.

What Is a Grounded Outlet?

A grounded outlet features three prongs that connect to three wires: a hot wire that transports electricity from a local power source to a building, a neutral wire that returns electricity to the power source, and a ground wire that reduces the risk of damage in case of a power surge.

A power surge occurs when an outlet or an entire electrical system receives too much electricity. This surplus can damage your appliances and devices, shock or electrocute the person using them, or lead to a fire. The ground wire helps prevent these events by directing the excess electricity back to the building’s main electrical panel and then to the earth, where it will be absorbed.

Why Are Grounded Outlets Superior?

electricianWhile grounded outlets have three prongs, ungrounded outlets only have two. That means an ungrounded outlet features just two wires, a hot wire and a neutral wire. Because it lacks a ground wire, it can’t protect against damages from power surges. If you’re concerned about your household’s safety, you should replace your ungrounded outlets with the three-pronged variety.

In addition, ungrounded outlets only work with smaller, lower-powered appliances, such as radios, lamps, and toasters. Grounded outlets, on the other hand, can safely power high-powered appliances and devices, like washing machines, computers, large-screen televisions, and stereo equipment. In other words, ungrounded outlets simply can’t accommodate many of the appliances and devices that are necessary for modern life.
