When your home relies on a well, the water pump is a vital part of the system that keeps a fresh supply flowing for cooking, cleaning, and more. There may come the point where the pump needs replacing. Here are five signs it is time.

What Are Some Signs You Need a New Water Pump?

1. Low Pressure

A change in pressure may point to a failing water pump, usually the motor. Either it is no longer able to pull in more water or it is not large enough for what your home needs, especially if you have recently added new fixtures, a larger water heater, or more water-based appliances. Have a water well expert inspect the pump if a noticeable decrease in water pressure occurs.

2. No Water

No water at all indicates an issue with your well, particularly with the pump. If you find that areas like the power source are operational, turn the breaker off and back on to see if the pump restarts. Plumbing issues in pipes can also interfere with water getting to your home, but if drains are okay and there are no leaks and floods, the pump may need replacing.

3. Dirty Water

In some cases, the pump may need to be relocated so it is not too far down, or you may need the device to be resized since it might be too large for what you need and is pulling too much. Other troubles include damaged screens, which can be replaced but avoid drinking your supply until water pump repairs are made.

4. Spitting Faucet

A spitting faucet is a sign that air is getting pulled in instead of water. The water pump may not be functioning well enough to draw in water, so air takes its place. A leaking pressure tank bladder may also be the culprit, but over time, this problem may affect your pump, causing it to short cycle and wear out more quickly.

5. Strange Sounds

If you hear clicking noises at the pressure switch near the tank, air in the bladder is getting out and causing the pump to continuously stop and start. Over time, this puts too much wear on the motor and will lead to a pump failure. Call a well specialist if you hear any strange sounds from your system.
