When a loved one is diagnosed with a terminal illness, there will come a time when they enter hospice care. This type of end of life care is focused on providing patients with comfort by reducing pain and providing emotional and spiritual support. As you prepare to visit a friend or family member in hospice care, here are a few points to keep in mind.

4 Tips When Seeing a Loved One in Hospice Care

1. Find the Right Time

Based on medication schedules, meal times, and the illness’s progression, there may be certain times of day where your loved one is napping or has trouble connecting and entertaining guests. With this in mind, talk to the hospice staff and caretakers to better understand the best time of day to schedule a visit. Plan within these parameters to ensure your presence is welcomed and appreciated.

2. Bring a Meaningful Token

Instead of flowers that can irritate the respiratory system or balloons that can crowd a room, bring along a small, memorable token such as a framed photo, a small piece of jewelry, a heartfelt card, or a figurine to brighten their day.

3. Focus on the Individual

Based on the illness being battled, the pain management plan, and the emotional burden of their situation, you may not receive intimate or positive reactions to your presence or the gifts you bring along. While it’s natural to take this personally, remain empathetic and instead, focus on the individual in hospice care. Hold their hand and cherish the moments you have together.

4. Don’t Wear Out Your Welcome

Patients in hospice care can tire easily, particularly when visiting with family and children. While you may want to put off your departure, remain cognizant of the time on the clock. Avoid wearing out your welcome and pay attention to your loved one’s state. If they’re yawning and struggling to stay awake, say your goodbyes and allow them the opportunity to rest.
