Windows can shatter for a variety of reasons, whether it occurs due to flying storm debris, off-course baseballs, or poor installation. No matter the cause, however, broken glass poses a serious risk of injury for those who come in contact with it. Protect your household by taking the following steps as soon as a window shatters.

How to Handle Shattered Windows

1. Prevent Access to the Area

Reduce the risk of cuts, scrapes, and other injuries by closing the door to the room where the window shattered. Instruct all household members to stay out. If the room doesn’t have a door, put up a baby gate or barrier and keep small children and pets in a separate area of the home.

2. Clean Up the Broken Glass

windowsPut on heavy-duty gloves, shoes, and long pants, and begin picking up the larger pieces of glass. Wrap them in butcher paper or place them in paper bags before putting them in the trash. This strategy helps prevent shards from breaking through plastic trash bags and injuring garbage collectors.

Sweep the smaller pieces into a dustpan and dispose of them the same way. Remove the tiniest bits by vacuuming the entire area, using a hose attachment for hard-to-reach crevices. If the glass shattered on a non-carpeted floor, sop up the remaining pieces with a damp paper towel. For carpeted floors, try catching small flecks by applying lines of duct tape, sticky side down.

3. Cover the Window Frame

Unless the window repair or replacement specialists can arrive right away, you’ll need to temporarily cover the damage. Hanging tarps, heavy-duty garbage bags, plastic sheeting, or shower curtains across the opening will protect your home from bugs and rain. If you’re worried about harsher weather or burglary, nail a piece of plywood into the frame or sill from the inside of the house.
