As the temperatures continue to drop, your air conditioning unit may no longer be an all-day necessity. In fact, you could save plenty by shutting it down completely, and just relying on ceiling fans during relatively warm afternoons. However, you can’t simply switch the thermostat to “heat” and call it a day—use these three tips to make a smooth and safe transition for the season.

3 Pointers for Shutting Down Your Air Conditioning Unit

1. Change the Filter

Throughout the warmer months, your air conditioning unit was both cooling and cleansing your breathing supply. The filter trapped contaminants circulating throughout your home, such as dirt and dust. Therefore, it’s important to change or clean your reusable filter before powering down the system for the season.

This way, you won’t face any problems next year when you try to turn it on and pump air through a clogged filter. If you’ll be using the same system during the colder months, changing the filter will ensure your breathing supply is healthy and allergen-free right away.

2. Shut Off Power

It will also protect you from safety hazards that arise in the next step. You can cut off power to your system by flipping the breaker switch, which is usually in a covered case near the outdoor unit.

3. Clean & Cover the Condenser

Once the power has been shut off, you can safely prepare the outdoor condenser unit for the winter without the risk of shock or electrocution. First, use a cleaning brush to sweep off the debris that may have settled on top of the metal box, including leaves, twigs, and nuts.

This way, they don’t get trapped inside the unit and attract wildlife, foster mold growth, or jam the fan. Then, use a specially designed cover to seal the top of your condenser unit from the cold temperatures, rain and snow. If you’re looking for a temporary fix, place a plastic trash can cover on top of the unit, and secure it with bungee cords.
