Whether you’re putting an RV away for the winter or stowing a commuter car while you’re out of town, investing in secure vehicle storage is the best way to protect it from the elements and vandalism. Before you put a vehicle in storage, however, there are a few steps you’ll want to take to ensure it’s ready to run when it’s time to drive it again. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.

Do:

Top off fluids.

If you’re storing a car for more than a month, change the oil. Contaminated oil can thicken, making it difficult for the engine to run when you turn the car on again. Used oil also contains carcinogens that can pose a health hazard with frequent exposure.

Fill up the gas tank, as well. When there is not enough gas in the tank, excess condensation can develop, causing the vehicle to go into hydrostatic lock and preventing the engine from starting.

Clean thoroughly.

This will remove any dirt and debris from the body or upholstery that may otherwise settle, causing stains or corrosion. After washing the frame and vacuuming out the inside, wax the exterior to prevent discoloration, and shampoo the interior to kill harmful bacteria and prevent odors or mold growth.

Don’t:

Neglect the tires.

If the tires are not adequately inflated, the car's weight can damage the rubber, creating flat spots. Before stowing a vehicle, inflate the tires to the recommended pressure inside the driver’s side door panel or owner’s manual. If you’re storing your vehicle for more than a month, consider lifting the car off the ground with a car jack to prevent tire damage.

Leave the vehicle uncovered.

Storing a car outdoors is not recommended as this exposes the vehicle to extreme weather conditions. To reduce the risk of corrosion and nicks from fallen debris or animals, purchase a cover to safeguard the car. Even if you are stowing the vehicle in secure indoor storage space, covering it is a good idea as it will keep dust from settling, maintaining a clean appearance.
