A well-designed sound system is essential in a modern church. When you have the right equipment, listeners can hear your music and sermons clearly, helping you spread your message further while avoiding confusion. There are a few main parts of a church sound system that you should pay attention to because they affect sound quality and volume the most.

What Do You Need for a Church Sound System?

1. Microphones

A microphone picks up the sound and converts it into an electronic signal that the rest of your sound equipment can read. Different types of microphones are meant to pick up speaking voices and various kinds of instruments. If your church often hosts musical performances, you may want to invest in specialized microphones for the highest quality of sound; otherwise, certain instruments may overwhelm your standard mics and cause feedback or distortion.

2. Mixers

Mixers also allow you to balance the different sound levels from the different mics if you’re using more than one. You can adjust these levels manually by using the control panel on the unit, or you can get an automatic mixer that will do most of the work independently. A mixer also allows you to mute microphones that aren’t in use without disconnecting them.

3. Speakers & Amplifiers

The signal from a microphone or mixing board is weak, so it needs to pass through an amplifier, or amp. The amp strengthens the electrical signal so it will be powerful enough to generate sound from the speakers in your church’s sound system.

You may have a few simple main speakers, or a full set of speakers, that are designed to handle a different range of sound. The clearer you want your sound to be, the more specialized your speakers will need to be. Also, the louder you want your feedback to be, the larger size and quantity of speakers you’ll need to use.
