When you grow tired of your kitchen cabinets, you might opt to have them refaced—a process that involves swapping out the old doors, hinges, and fixtures for newer alternatives. In some cases, however, the entire structure should be removed and replaced. Here are a few signs that your cabinetry should be taken out.

When Should You Replace Your Kitchen’s Cabinets?

1. Warped Wood

Kitchen cabinets can warp over time due to water damage from exposure to cooking steam. If the frame or shelving is curving or bowing, the material is weak and could fall apart completely.

There’s no way to treat water damage and preserve the original framework, so it’s best to take everything out and replace the entire system.

2. Soft Surface

Cabinetry should be rigid and strong. If you find that any part of your kitchen cabinets feels soft or spongy to the touch, the surface has likely sustained water damage.

This issue is common among storage systems made from cheaper wood alternatives, such as particleboard. If you don’t replace weakened sections, the shelves might collapse and damage dishware and other stored items.

3. Inadequate Storage

Have a new system installed and equip it with features that increase storage space, such as deep divider drawers, pull-out shelving, kitchen island cabinets, and lazy-Susan corner shelves.

4. Unstable Doors

Cosmetic problems with cabinet doors can be corrected through refacing. Structural issues, however, typically require replacement.

For example, if the hinges keep coming loose, the particleboard might be deteriorating as described above. Alternatively, if the doors won’t close and open properly, the frame may be misaligned due to water damage and other structural problems.
