Rare Microlot Yemen beans – microfarm direct

Early this year, we received an email from a young Yemen coffee farmer and importer interested in entering the US home roaster market.  Hudaifa Tayeb contacted us because he felt our little company shared the same values and quest for bean excellence as his new business. We cupped his samples, and the quality exceeded our high standards.  Unfortunately, due to covid19 concerns we were not able to expand our Yemen offerings.

Thank goodness Hudaifa persisted!  Yemen beans have become increasingly hard to source and are often over-priced. This forces many well-intentioned sellers and roasters to resort to lower quality Yemen beans, or to just drop them altogether.  We are grateful to Hudaifa for hanging in there with us, and we are very proud to introduce this farmer and importer to you, along with our first offerings of his wonderful Yemen beans.  Please join us in supporting our newest partner and his affiliated farmers.

In his own words, here is Hudaifa’s story:

imageHudaifa Tayeb is a man who lived and grew seeing this whole revolution and transition taking place in his country. In 2015 when the first missile that started the horrible war in Yemen was fired at a location opposite his house in the capital city Sanaa, Hudaifa decided to flee the country with his family looking for a new future elsewhere. He left everything behind him, but carried one thing that he always believed will be his connection with his country and region, and that was his bag of Haraaz coffee beans. After arriving in Canada in 2018, Hudaifa launched a company with the concept of Human to Human interaction, and connected with his fellow farmers, family, friends and business partners in Yemen to start operations of coffee production, export from Yemen and import in Canada. The sole vision and aim behind this concept is supporting the farmers after this huge revolution and transition, and bringing back glory to this hidden and forgotten black gold of Yemen.

Yemen Mocha Haraaz AA+

As low as $14.79/lb

Taste: The earthy aroma of this brewed coffee belies the natural sweet brown sugar taste.  You’ll notice berries, and chocolate, and mild citrus acidity, and a very smooth medium mouthfeel.

Roast:  A lighter roast will generate a tart snap in the cup, but taking this bean through a very distinct first crack and just into second produces the distinctive berry and chocolate flavor.  Stay patient as first crack may take longer to achieve, but then the roast moves along quickly.

About: This coffee comes from the Haraaz region, the premier specialty grade Yemen coffee producing region. This area consists of a range of mountains with altitudes from 1800 to 2450 MASL.  The unique geography boasts an amazing mild and cool climate, in addition to the natural fresh mountain…MORE

Yemen Haraaz Peaberry

As low as $16.79/lb

Taste: Like a classic Yemen, this bean produces an earthy and rich aroma.  In the cup you’ll notice tart, flowery, and bright citrus acidity with deep undertones of dark chocolate.

Roast: A hard and dense peaberry, we suggest a higher charge (starting) temp to help the roast along to medium/dark. You will notice a very distinct 1st crack.

About: In the 15th century a disastrous influence swept the country.  It was the drug called Qat/ Khat (named from the leaves of the Catha edulis shrub).  When chewed like tobacco or consumed in tea, this drug produced a feeling of euphoria.  Many farmers replaced their coffee plants with Qat, never realizing the nightmare that this decision would cause the industry and especially the people…More

Yemen Haraaz Red

As low as $29.89/lb

Taste: This exquisite Yemen has it all: rich fruity aroma, a complex taste profile, and easily identifiable flavors of red fruit, delicate rosewater, plum, and cherries.  Marty even noticed a hint of leather.  Combined with a full, velvety mouthfeel, the very high 89 cupping score earned this bean a spot in our Connoisseur’s Corner collection.

Roast: Start with a nice high charge (starting) temp.  We pulled them right after the very distinct 1st crack to capture all of the flavors.  But this hard bean takes all roast levels well.

About: Yemeni coffee farmers traditionally like to call the fruits of Haraaz Red  “Al Aqeeq Al Ahmar” (the Red Agate) after the precious and famous Yemeni stone.  In this manner they express their gratitude and appreciation of these fruits.

Burhan Al Gyari is a passionate, strong and wise man – an innovative young farmer known for hard work and dedication to his family and his craft…More
