If your bathroom remodeling project included new tile, the right care will keep the material looking pristine for years. You can avoid accidental damage that results in costly repairs. Review these maintenance guidelines to ensure you make the most of the installation.

Do:

Use a high-quality, eco-friendly cleaner.

Clean the tiles regularly with an environmentally friendly cleaner recommended for your material type. Follow manufacturer instructions to remove mildew, soap scum, shampoo residue, hair colorant stains, and dust particles from the tile.

For stubborn grime, scrub with a soft-bristled brush. It’s especially important to follow these steps if you have porcelain tile, as the porous material can stain without proper care.

Apply grout sealer.

bathroom remodelSeal tile grout once a year to preserve your bathroom remodeling project. If you’re unsure whether the grout requires sealing, add a few water droplets to a section and time how quickly the material absorbs them. Water that absorbs in a minute or less indicates that it’s time to reapply the sealer and protect the grout from mildew and personal care products.

Don’t:

Work with abrasive cleansers & cleaning pads.

Keep harsh cleaners and abrasive cleaning pads — such as scouring powder and steel wool — away from tiles. These products cause grout to disintegrate and contribute to scratches and premature degradation.

Also, avoid acidic cleaners to keep the bathroom shower, tub, and floor looking brand-new instead of damaged. The harsh substances can diminish the shine of the tiles.

Allow tile to stay wet.

Dry the tiles as often as possible to inhibit mold and mildew growth. Keep the bathroom fan on for 20 to 30 minutes after bathing to help the room dry out.

You can also use old towels to soak up excess moisture once everyone is finished showering. Opening the windows will ventilate the space and ensure any lingering water evaporates.
