Healthy and well-manicured lawns improve the appearance of outdoor areas and can boost your home’s curb appeal. As you prepare to plant grass, select a species that will thrive in your region and continue to grow throughout the changing seasons. Below, you’ll find a handful of turf types and lawn care tips for Connecticut properties.

4 Types of Grass for Connecticut Lawns

1. Perennial Rye

Perennial ryegrass has medium to fine blades and grows in bunches. It germinates rapidly and thrives during droughts, meaning it will continue to grow healthy during Connecticut’s dry winters.

Water the grass one to two inches weekly to prevent it from drying out. Have a professional lawn care service fertilize your yard every four to six months to replenish essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

2. Red Fescue

Mow the grass every seven to 10 days and overseed when dry patches develop, such as in the late fall and early spring. Red fescue may also need to be dethatched in the spring if dry clumps of grass develop due to uneven watering. Avoid this by using oscillating sprinklers and running them for about 10 to 20 minutes weekly.

3. Bluegrass

Kentucky bluegrass has wide blades that grow to about two to three inches tall. It’s dark green with a slightly blueish tint and can withstand cold temperatures. You’ll need to water the grass with one to two inches of moisture weekly since it has shallow roots that do not retain fluids for long.

4. Zoysia

Zoysia grass has bright green blades that are short and wiry. It withstands summer heat and winter droughts in Connecticut. Water with one-half to one inch of moisture each week, or when the grass appears dry. Keep root systems strong by mowing only the top third of the grass once every other week during the spring and summer growing seasons.
