Whether you are in a severe collision or a minor fender bender, getting into a car accident can leave you feeling shaken and disoriented. In this state, it can be challenging to know what actions to take. The guide below outlines steps for looking after your family's well-being and gathering all the information you need for your insurance claim

What to Do After a Motor Vehicle Accident

1. Call 9-1-1 & Remain On-Site

Unless you or a passenger requires immediate medical attention, stay at the scene. Call the authorities so that an accident report can be made. You will need a copy of this report to file an insurance claim. Even if you believe you were not at fault, you could face hit-and-run charges for leaving the accident site too soon.

2. Document the Incident

insurance claimDocument as much as you can of the scene to use as evidence for your insurance claim or—if the other driver doesn't have insurance or your claim is denied—a potential personal injury lawsuit.

This should involve taking pictures of each car involved in the accident, as well as any injuries you may have sustained. Also, photograph any environmental conditions—like a pothole or an obscured sign—that may have contributed to the collision. If possible, stop witnesses and ask them for their contact information in case you need them to testify or sign an affidavit describing what they saw.

3. Seek Medical Treatment

Even if you do not believe you are seriously hurt, have yourself examined by a doctor as soon as possible after an accident. You may be wounded and not know it. Concussions and whiplash, for example, may not result in symptoms right away.

Both insurance companies will also want to see these records. If you decide to file a personal injury suit, the doctor's statements will provide critical evidence. If you delay seeking treatment, the other party might try to claim that your injuries were sustained or worsened by an unrelated incident to avoid paying you your full compensation.
