How Can You Tell If Your Transmission Is Flooded?

Inspect your vehicle following a storm. If the interior carpet is damp, it likely took on water. Pop the hood to inspect the transmission dipstick to see if the fluid remains at a proper level. Most importantly, pay attention to the transmission fluid's color, usually a bright red. If rain has gotten into the system, it will often turn a murky or milky grey color. You can also check to see if the air filter is wet. 

If either of these is true, arrange for your car to be towed to an auto repair shop. Driving with a flooded transmission can cause engine damage.

What Are Possible Repair Solutions?

The type of repair will depend on the severity of the flooded transmission. Likely, an auto repair technician will start by disconnecting the battery and other affected components to let them dry out. The spark plugs might also be pulled to hand-crank the engine to suction out any trapped water.
