Fall makes for great football weather, but it’s also a warning sign for winter. Pennsylvania tends to get cold, even if you’re not near Lake Erie or living in Monongahela. Before the weather entirely turns, homeowners should prepare their HVAC system with a heating contractor's help. That way, when winter does arrive, you’ll only have to wear a coat and gloves when you’re outside.

How Can You Prevent an HVAC Breakdown During the Winter?

1. Inspect the Furnace

First, do a visual evaluation in the fall and again sporadically during winter. If the furnace is difficult to access, contact a heating contractor.

If the furnace is accessible, remove any debris or items within a three-foot radius of it. Furnaces need room to breathe to function at peak efficiency. Having materials too close to it will restrict airflow. The restriction will lead to cooler temperatures in the home despite the thermostat’s setting. The furnace will still attempt to reach the programmed temperature, straining its components, and diminishing its life span.

During the fall, turn the furnace on at least three times to ensure the system is working. Often, debris will build up in the ventilation systems or inside the flue. If they aren’t cleaned out, the furnace won’t run as efficiently and will be more likely to break down.

2. Schedule Routine Maintenance

Heating ContractorIt’s always easier and cheaper to schedule maintenance rather than waiting for repairs or a replacement to become necessary. Make an appointment with a heating contractor who can do a more detailed examination of the furnace and its components. They’ll be able to diagnose and repair flaws before they become costly issues or cause a break down once winter starts in earnest.

3. Replace Air Filter

Your air filter should be replaced every month, as it prevents dust and harmful particulates from entering the home. When the filter becomes clogged, air quality diminishes, potentially causing illnesses, especially for those with respiratory conditions or allergies. The clogging will also force the HVAC system to work harder to achieve the desired temperature, decreasing its life span.

4. Clean Air Ducts

Although filters are highly effective, the air ducts will still collect contaminants, allergens, mold, and dust over time. When you activate the furnace, the heat interacts with these pollutants and will worsen their potential effects. Having a heating contractor clean the ducts out will ensure the best quality of air in your home.
