Each tooth contains a series of canals that hold nerve tissue. When one becomes infected, your dentist will recommend performing a root canal. It’s a standard dental procedure and one of the few ways to save your tooth. Below is a helpful guide so you know what to expect from this treatment.

Understanding Root Canals

Why They’re Performed

Root canal infections develop when decay-causing bacteria enter the root chambers. It may be through an untreated cavity or a large chip or fracture. Once inside, the bacteria will infect the soft tissue, called the pulp, and kill the tooth. It’s often painful, and the infection can spread to other teeth if unaddressed.

What to Expect

dentistThe dentist will first numb the area around the tooth. They’ll then enter the root chambers through the crown of the tooth. Next, the dentist will remove the infected pulp with small filing tools and flush the chambers with water. They must remove all infected pulp and sterilize the chambers with an antimicrobial solution.

They’ll seal the dried chambers as well as the tooth’s surface to prevent bacteria from entering again. To ensure you can keep using the tooth, the dentist will place a crown over it. This durable cap provides additional defense and withstands chewing forces.

Aftercare

There may be some discomfort after the procedure. Your dentist will often recommend a light painkiller to take for a day or so. Anticipate some swelling and inflammation as well. It’s best to avoid chewing on the tooth until you receive the crown. This reduces stress and will keep the recovering tooth clean.

Prevent future issues by brushing and flossing twice a day, seeing your dentist twice a year, and eating a well-balanced diet low in sugary and acidic foods. Ask your family dentistry professional about a custom mouthguard to prevent chips during impact sports and activities.
