If your home relies on a septic tank, you’ll need to know proper septic system care to avoid issues and expensive repairs later on. Waste treatment systems can be confusing at first, but this guide will cover some basic guidelines to help you keep yours in optimal condition.

Do:

Take care of the drain field.

The drain field is the area where water is filtered after it leaves the septic tank. To avoid overwhelming the system with more liquid than it can handle, divert water away from the drain field by keeping sprinklers far from the area.

The ground should be leveled to prevent rainwater from flooding this section of the lawn. You shouldn’t park vehicles or heavy machinery on the drain field because the pressure can compact the ground and make it more difficult for the component to absorb water from the tank.

Reduce water usage.

Even though the system is built to absorb and filter water, it can become overwhelmed and flood if too much moisture is sent into it. You should monitor how much water you’re using and try to conserve when you can.

Don’t:

Use additives.

Septic additives are products that help break down waste in the tank. Theoretically, these substances are supposed to prevent the need for frequent pumping, but most additives don’t work and can cause more harm than good. The chemicals have been known to discharge scum and waste into the drain field, causing the system to fail.

Flush harmful items.

The septic system can handle water, waste, and toilet paper, and other items shouldn’t be sent to the tank. Solid materials can clog the pipes and overflow the tank. Don’t flush wipes, feminine hygiene products, bandages, diapers, or similar items. You should also avoid pouring too much oil or grease down the drain.
