The FDA is assessing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in the screening of imported foods. A pilot program was launched in the spring of 2019 to learn about the benefits of this approach and the first phase of this test was used to target seafood at the border that may be unsafe.

Scientist used historical data from past shipments that were refused entry or subjected to additional scrutiny as inputs to the ML screening tool. Preliminary results of the test suggest this approach can be used to expedite the clearance of lower risk seafood shipments, and identify those that are higher risk. The FDA decided to start with this commodity because 94% of all seafood consumed in America each year is imported.

These developments will impact multiple participants across the food supply chain. For #coldstorage facilities, the development of AI technologies will highlight the importance of offering flexible and more personalized services for their customers.
