Foundation underpinning is a way to stabilize a building. It’s a process that strengthens, repairs, or deepens an existing foundation. It’s also used for homes or commercial buildings that will construct additions to their upper levels. There are several ways foundation underpinning is achieved, which are featured below.

A Guide to Foundation Underpinning Methods

1. Mass Pouring

This method is for projects that require shallow underpinning without a lot of deep excavation. First, the loose soil beneath the surface of the original structure is removed. Then, concrete is poured into the excavated space to increase the strength of the foundation. Mass pouring is perhaps the most commonly used method of underpinning.

2. Pile

The piles lift the foundation so that the weight of the building is transferred off of damaged, unsteady concrete. This type of underpinning is ideal for clay soils and waterlogged or erosive areas.

3. Beam & Base

This type of underpinning supports an existing foundation with beams, which is built below the structure. The beams can also act in place of a foundation.

Once erected, the building’s load is transferred from the beam to an evenly spread concrete base, which gives the structure additional support. The use of the beams ensures the stability of the foundation by distributing its weight evenly.
