If you have trees on your property, it’s important to learn how to maintain them. Unfortunately, when searching for information, you may come across some myths. To help you treat your trees properly, here are three of the most common tree care misconceptions.

What Are the Most Common Tree Care Myths?

1. You Should Always Stake a Newly Planted Tree

In most cases, unstaked trees grow healthier trunks and root systems than staked trees. That’s because staking restricts the tree’s natural movement. In addition, the staking ties or wires could damage the trunk.

The only time you should consider staking a tree is if it’s a bare-root tree (meaning it doesn’t have a root ball) or if the root ball is much smaller than the tree’s crown of leaves. Such trees may need extra help standing on their own. However, avoid staking them too tightly (they should be able to move a little bit), and get rid of the stakes when the second growing season begins.

2. You Should Remove the Tops of Trees That Grow Too High

tree careRemoving the entire top of a tree (or “topping” it) poses several risks. For instance, it requires large cuts that often fail to heal; with unhealed wounds, a tree faces a greater chance of disease and decay. Moreover, getting rid of lots of leaves prevents the tree from properly nourishing itself, as leaves allow the tree to absorb nutrients.

If a tree is growing too tall, tree care specialists recommend pruning it without removing any top branches. If you’re still concerned about its height, consider replacing it with a tree that won’t grow as tall.

3. All Insects Are Harmful to Trees

Many insects can harm trees. For example, bark beetles can burrow into one and expose the core to disease and parasites, tent caterpillars eat leaves and buds, and aphids suck out plant juices that contain nutrients the tree needs.

However, many bugs are considered beneficial insects. For instance, bees, wasps, and butterflies help trees by pollinating them. In addition, ladybugs, spiders, and other predatory insects feed on aphids and other pests that threaten your tree. In fact, some people use such insects to get rid of harmful insects without having to use potentially dangerous pesticides.
