During warm weather, it’s common for ants to find their way into your home. These pests often hang out in your kitchen and will get into any food that isn’t sealed and stored away. Pest control is always an option if ants are already in your home, but it’s best to prevent them from getting inside in the first place. Here are some tips for keeping ants out.

How to Keep Ants From Getting Into Your Home

1. Remove Ant Trails

Ants will often travel in a straight line called an ant trail while making their way toward an entrance to your home. These trails are noticeable since you’ll see many ants moving together at once. The ants are drawn in by scents along the trail, so you can throw them off by applying a mixture of vinegar and water along the length of their path. This simple pest control measure will force them to divert to another spot. Keep an eye out for separate trails since the colony may travel separately toward different entrances.

2. Seal off Entrance Points

pest controlAnts are tiny and can often enter your home through cracks around your windows and doors or holes in your walls. Ant colonies send out scout ants that focus solely on finding food sources for the whole group. It’s common to have scout ants enter your home before the entire colony follows. To keep these pests out, close off all open spots and reinforce your windows with extra caulk so that the seals don’t degrade as quickly.

3. Control Ant Colonies

Ant nests may form in your yard or debris, like rotted pieces of wood. Different types of ants are drawn to certain materials, so keep an eye out for swarms of ants around your home. It’s common for them to live beneath mounds in your yard. While knocking over the mounds may be tempting, it’s not effective at keeping ants away since their mounds can extend deep into the ground. To get rid of the nest, you’ll want to apply ant insecticide or call in a pest control professional.
