The flu claims lives every year, and considering the toll of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever for Americans to take measures to ensure their health. The yearly flu vaccine is recommended, in almost all cases, for the entire family. Here’s a parents’ guide to flu shots and what they can expect.

Why Flu Vaccines Are Important

Flu estimates for this year are between 24,000–62,000 deaths and between 39 million and 56 million cases. New strains of the virus appear each year, so the latest flu vaccine is necessary to protect against them.

vaccineThe CDC recommends that children aged 6 months and older receive an annual flu shot. Kids have weaker immune systems and may not be able to adequately defend against the virus without a vaccine. Children with asthma, heart problems, and lung conditions also face significant medical dangers.

It’s best to vaccinate them by the end of October when flu season kicks off. Children aged 9 and younger and those receiving their first flu shot will require two vaccinations. These are delivered at least four weeks apart, so mark the scheduled dates on your calendar.

How They’re Done

There are two forms of the flu vaccine: injectable and live-inactivated. The first is delivered through a syringe. Live-inactivated is a spray that’s appropriate for people aged 2-49. It’s delivered through the nose and is an excellent alternative for children who are afraid of shots.

Flu shots are quick and easy at a pediatric care professional’s office. Assure your child that it will only hurt for a moment and will keep them from getting sick. Let them watch a video on your phone or listen to music to ease anxiety. The pediatrician will do everything they can to make them comfortable.
