All homeowners should be familiar with their home’s systems, so they can have educated conversations with contractors. Your plumbing system may use a few different types of pipes. Learn how to recognize which types your home has or what you might want to have your plumber install in the guide below.

A Guide to Common Pipes in Homes

1. PEX

Cross-linked polyethylene is a newer option that has quickly become popular, so it’s common in recently built homes. It’s used for water supply lines throughout the house since it’s strong enough to withstand the water pressure but flexible enough to fit in the home’s layout. This inexpensive material can be joined with copper pipe, is easy to work with, and is color-coded to indicate whether the water inside is hot (red) or cold (blue).

2. Copper

plumberCopper has been used for many years and is still used today, so you’ll find it in homes of all ages. This rigid material may cost more to install than other materials and isn’t easy to work with, so a plumber will need to ensure it’s properly soldered.

However, it’s a solid investment that will last a long time, even in intense pressure and temperatures. It’s used throughout the plumbing system but is especially popular in water supply lines because it won’t affect the water quality.

3. ABS

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene is a black pipe commonly used for drains, vents, and waste pipes. You may find it under your sink or behind your toilet. It’s softer than PVC, so it can withstand cold temperatures without cracking.
