Automotive window tinting improves privacy, reduces glare, minimizes heat gain inside a vehicle, and keeps out harmful UV rays that damage upholstery and cause skin cancer. After having your vehicle tinted, you’ll need to take care of it correctly to reap these benefits. Here are some do’s and don'ts to keep your tinted car windows in top shape.

Do:

Choose a foam cleanser.

To enjoy the cleanest windows and greatest visibility, select a foam window cleaner. It’s less likely to leave streaks or damage the film. You can find it at most auto parts and hardware stores.

If you can’t find an appropriate foaming cleanser, mix one part vinegar with 10 parts warm water in a spray bottle for a safe, non-streak cleaning alternative.

Be careful around the edges.

Window tinting in Kapolei, HIWhen cleaning tinted windows, be especially careful around the edges of the film. The edges and corners are particularly vulnerable to lifting and peeling. Rub them gently with a soft cloth or rubber squeegee. Use warm water to break up dirt—but it shouldn’t be too hot, or the film might blister.

If the edges start to peel, don’t pick at them or try to remedy the issue. Instead, have the film professionally touched up.

Don't:

Clean with ammonia.

Never use harsh chemicals like ammonia on the film. It can start to bubble, change colors, and become brittle and hazy. Eventually, it will start to peel off, which is why professionals use ammonia to remove old film before reinstalling. Instead, use warm water, gentle products, and a clean, soft cloth.

Roll the windows down for a week.

Avoid rolling down your windows for a week or so after having window film installed. This gives the adhesive time to cure before subjecting the tinting to any stress. For the same reason, don't wash your car, or at least the tinted windows, for a week to ten days.
