Like many medical procedures, many people are apprehensive about getting root canals. However, this targeted endodontic treatment has come a long way over the last few decades and is designed to eliminate your discomfort and preserve your teeth. Here are some misconceptions about root canals and why dentists might recommend the treatment.

What Are Some Root Canal Myths?

1. You’re Better Off Pulling the Tooth

When a tooth is significantly damaged or decayed, your dentist may recommend either a root canal or an extraction to protect your health. While many people are quick to have extractions because of the lower cost, removing teeth can impact your ability to talk and chew, and dental implants are more expensive than a root canal now. Extractions may be necessary when the tooth isn’t salvageable, but root canals are usually preferable when the tooth can be saved.

2. Root Canals Are Painful

Although many people talk about how painful root canals are, the procedure is designed to eliminate your discomfort. Before the work starts, the tooth and the surrounding area are carefully numbed using a local nerve block.

After the area is cleaned and disinfected, a filling is placed and covered with a temporary crown. Many people experience a significant reduction in tooth pain, even immediately following their appointment.

3. Root Canals Aren’t Usually Successful

While it’s true that some teeth may need more than one endodontic treatment, the vast majority of root canals are successful. One 2015 study found that a staggering 93% of root canals were intact one year later, and 88% of teeth treated with root canals were still healthy and intact two years later.
