Laminate flooring is made of synthetic materials and consists of several layers that are sealed together. This creates a durable and affordable surface that offers an attractive look to match any home. However, with so many varieties on the market, finding the right flooring can be challenging. If you're preparing for a new installation, keep the following in mind.

How to Select the Right Laminate Flooring

1. Choose Between Wood & Plastic

Laminate flooring can consist of either engineered wood or plastic. Engineered wood flooring has a thin layer of hardwood on top, making it appear more authentic. While it's more expensive than plastic, it's perfect for people who want the look and feel of hardwood at an affordable price.

Plastic laminate flooring is made with a wood grain print. It won't feel like wood, but it's more affordable and still looks great. Wood laminate flooring can be refinished, so it lasts longer, but plastic laminate flooring is best if your floors experience a lot of wear or regularly encounter moisture.

2. Consider Your Family’s Activity Level

laminateIf you live with only adults and no pets, you can choose any finish for your laminate flooring. However, children and pets can damage the material, which might influence your choice. If your floor is more prone to damage or grime, consider options with varied grain patterns to hide stains or blemishes. You might also want to choose a low-gloss finish or distressed or hand-scraped patina to keep the surfaces looking new.

3. Pick the Right AC Rating

The AC rating of a laminate floor helps determine how thick it is, and thus its durability. For example, an AC1 floor is thin and best suited for areas that don't receive a lot of foot traffic, such as guest bedrooms. AC2 floors work for medium-traffic areas, while AC3 is suitable for rooms with all kinds of traffic, including kitchens or living rooms. AC4 and 5 laminate are usually reserved for commercial spaces due to their high durability, but they could also be installed in homes.
