It’s not unusual to chip or crack a tooth. This imperfection can range from minor to severe, so it’s important to see your dentist for further evaluation. More serious fractures can lead to or be caused by deeper oral health concerns, such as decay or an abscess, in addition to the cosmetic effect. Luckily, there are several treatment options regardless of the severity of the damage.

How Dentists Treat Chipped or Cracked Teeth

1. Contouring

When the damage is especially minor, it’s usually unnecessary to perform anything more invasive than gentle recontouring of the tooth. This process uses a drill to smooth down the affected area and restore the shape of the tooth.

2. Crown

If you suffer significant tooth breakage, your dentist may elect to apply a crown, which is an artificial cap made to cover the tooth and restore its shape and function.

It typically involves at least two visits, including one to perform an X-ray, take impressions, and prepare the affected tooth for the crown. At the next, your provider will permanently affix the crown to the tooth.

3. Veneer

dentistIn some cases, such as a crack in a tooth that’s visible when you smile, a veneer may be the appropriate solution. This thin shell is designed to cover the front portion of the tooth, immediately improving its appearance as a result. The process takes at least two appointments to remove some enamel from the affected tooth, take impressions for veneer creation, prepare the tooth, and harden the veneer on the surface.

4. Root Canal

When tooth breakage is particularly deep, it may affect the pulp, which is the fleshy area in the middle of the tooth. If this area suffers damage and deteriorates, bacteria may enter the space and eventually lead to a painful infection with serious symptoms, including swelling, pus, and bone loss.

During treatment, the affected area, including the nerve and any decay, is removed. The space is then cleaned thoroughly. If necessary, a crown will be added to restore the tooth’s appearance.
