Garage doors often operate multiple times throughout the day. This frequency of use can cause their mechanisms to wear out quickly. Spotting these problems early on can minimize the extent and cost of repairs. Here are a few indicators that your garage door might be due for a tune-up.

When to Call a Garage Door Repair Service

1. Problems Opening & Closing

If a garage door stops halfway as it’s opening, worn-out springs may be the culprit. Bad electrical connections, broken cables, and stripped gears are other reasons a door might have trouble opening and closing.

Even if it’s still possible to operate it manually, don’t leave these problems unaddressed. Forcing the door into motion when cables or gears are damaged can increase the cost of future repairs.

2. Changes in Speed

garage doorGarage doors should start moving within one to two seconds of being triggered. Delays or pauses in operation are signs of trouble. Lubricating the door system might help fix this issue. Do not use WD-40® as it can strip the grease necessary for operation. Instead, find a lithium or silicone grease spray. Apply it liberally to the moving parts, including hinges, springs, and rollers.

Stopping and starting during operation means the pulleys could be worn out. If repairs aren’t made and the pulley snaps, the door will get stuck in place. As springs wear out, the speed at which the door closes will increase, leading to a higher risk of injuries.

3. Excessive Noise

Properly functioning overhead doors should produce a smooth, steady noise while operating. If you notice a creaking or strained sound, it could indicate things aren’t working right.

The type of sound can help with diagnosing the issue. Rumbling or grating indicates damaged springs while popping sounds mean the sections aren’t lined up. Grinding sounds happen when the door is misaligned in its tracks.

4. Extra Movement

Jerking and shuddering are signs that the rollers aren’t in their tracks. This problem is often caused by impacts from vehicles. Snapped springs, worn rollers, and broken cables can also jar things out of position. This also causes gaps and crooked closures. In addition to the safety risks, this decreases energy efficiency and creates an entry point for pests.
