Living with hearing loss can impact all areas of your life. Thankfully, getting hearing aids that fit your needs and budget is easier than ever. However, expect a slight adjustment period as you get comfortable with wearing the devices. Here are a few tips to make it go easier.

How to Adjust to Wearing Hearing Aids

1. Start in a Quiet Room

When you first get your hearing aids, wait to turn them on until you are in a quiet room. Too many sounds at once can overwhelm your brain, so you need to give it time to adjust. Moving to a quiet place in your house will provide you with a chance to pick out individual sounds and rediscover faint noises.

Also, with limited sounds, you’ll notice if any are causing irritation. Make a note of these and present them to your hearing aid professional on your next visit, so they can make adjustments.

2. Increase Wear Time

hearing aidsIt’s fine not to wear your hearing aids all day at first. Getting used to the feel of them can take a little time. However, you will benefit by slowly increasing this time a little each day and trying to introduce new sounds. Eventually, you should be able to walk into a busy room and not be bothered by all the conflicting noises.

3. Don’t Turn Up the Volume Too Much

Your hearing aids will automatically adjust to the surrounding environment. However, you can probably manually adjust these settings if needed.

When turning them up, avoid going too high. Your devices are not intended to detect sounds normal ears cannot. Turning them up too high to hear faint noises could end up damaging your hearing if a louder sound occurs during this time.
