Creating a residential cleaning schedule can help keep your family healthy and happy at home. When surfaces aren’t covered in allergens, it will be less challenging for family members to remain productive when working and comfortable when enjoying downtime. Here’s some advice to help you breathe easier.

How to Reduce Allergens With Residential Cleaning

1. Clean Window Treatments

When vacuuming carpeting and upholstered furniture each week, use a handheld vacuum to go over fabric window treatments. This will remove dust and pet fur that often clings to drapes and curtains.

Wash fabric window treatments with mild detergent once a month to remove grime and odors. A microfiber towel can lift pollen and other allergens between blind slats.

2. Wipe Damp Bathroom Surfaces

To avoid respiratory distress, headaches, and additional health concerns, use a microfiber towel or mop to wipe down surfaces after showering. Leave the door or window open a crack to help steam ventilate when running hot water.

3. Use HEPA Filters

High-efficiency particulate air filters extract at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, and other microscopic particles. Using a vacuum with this filter at least once a week around the house can minimize allergies.

HVAC systems are also equipped with filters at the return duct or the air handler. You can purchase HEPA varieties to improve indoor air quality. Replace these filters once every 60 days or so to prevent them from becoming clogged.
