Autocycles are an increasingly popular alternative to traditional motorcycles, favored by many riders for stability, comfort, and thrilling speeds. Even though they feature a third wheel and fall into a distinct category of vehicle, though, drivers are still required to obtain a motorcycle endorsement to operate one in North Carolina. Here’s a closer look at how to obtain the necessary qualifications.

License Requirements for Autocycle Owners

Any adult resident of North Carolina with a valid full provisional, regular, or commercial driver’s license may apply for either a motorcycle endorsement or learner’s permit. You may choose to first obtain a permit to gain more time to sharpen your skills before taking the final tests.

Drivers aged 16 to 18 must first apply for a learner’s permit, which will allow them to operate autocycles only with the accompaniment of fully licensed motorcyclists. At age 18 and up, with a regular driver’s license, riders are welcome to apply for a full motorcycle endorsement.

Apart from a valid license, applicants must provide one of each of the following at their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office:

  • Proof of Age and Identity: birth certificate, tax document, military identification, current passport, or school ID.
  • Proof of Social Security: Social Security card, 1099 tax form, W-2 form, DD-214 military separation form, or payroll records.
  • Proof of Residency: utility bill, housing agreement or mortgage document, tax records, or voter precinct card.

Finally, the DMV will require a fee of $15 for a learner’s permit, which will last for 12 months and can be renewed once for an additional six months. A full motorcycle license will last for eight years at an annual cost of $4 plus $1.75 for an annual motorcycle endorsement fee.

Tests Needed to Obtain a Learner’s Permit

autocyclesThere are three tests that every applicant must pass: vision, road signs, and knowledge. The vision test involves checks for visual acuity to test clarity and response. Individuals with eyesight below 20/40 must wear corrective lenses or face a penalty equivalent to that of unlicensed driving.

The road sign test consists of successfully identifying all the signs presented to the applicant. The DMV provides a free handbook with all NC road signs pictured and described, and it’s necessary to study this to pass the test. The knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam to determine the extent of the applicant’s basic understanding of traffic laws and safe driving techniques.
