During pregnancy, oral health issues can become more prevalent, including cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay. Changes in saliva, food cravings, and increased levels of certain hormones all contribute to these changes. Fortunately, you can protect your teeth by following some oral care do’s and don’ts. Here’s what you need to know.

Do:

See the dentist.

During your pregnancy, visit the dentist at least twice. In addition to providing advice, they’ll clean your smile, keeping plaque at bay. Additionally, they’ll take care of any current dental problems, such as cavities, keeping them from getting worse during pregnancy. Finally, they can provide a fluoride treatment, which will prevent the negative effects the changes in your mouth’s acidity.

Eat right.

Do your best to stay away from sugary treats, such as candy, pop, and ice cream, as well as acidic beverages, like orange juice. Try to fill your diet with options that are good for your smile, including cheese, milk, fruits, and vegetables.

Don’t:

Don’t miss a brushing or flossing session.

During pregnancy, it’s especially important to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush for two minutes to keep those pearly whites shining bright. However, don’t brush too hard or for too long, as you could wear down your enamel and gums, leading to cavities and gum recession.

Also, floss once a day. This will help remove plaque and food debris, protecting against decay. It helps to use a mirror while you floss so you can ensure you are getting the floss to all areas of the tooth-gum interface.

Don’t let your mouth get dry.

Dry mouth is a common symptom of pregnancy. It can lead to a number of oral health issues, including decay, mouth sores, and gum disease. It can be treated by drinking water regularly throughout the day and at night utilizing a humidifier when sleeping.
