Ensuring your construction crew has adequate access to restroom facilities is essential, and portable toilets are a highly convenient, cost-effective way to meet those demands. In determining how many to provide, there are a few factors to consider. Here’s a closer look at how to adhere to government regulations and provide common courtesies that your workers will appreciate.

How Many Public Toilets Should Your Jobsite Have?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, has made recommendations for the number of restrooms that should be available on construction sites. This includes permanent bathrooms that are accessible to workers, so the number of portable toilet rentals you’ll need may be lower in cases where public restrooms are available.

If you have a small work crew that consists of 20 or fewer workers, you only need to provide a single restroom or equivalent portable toilet. A workforce consisting of 21 through 190 individuals requires one toilet and one urinal for every 40 workers. For example, a staff of 160 workers will require four toilets and four urinals to be provided on-site. If you have more than 200 workers, you must provide a minimum of one toilet and one urinal for every 50 workers.

What Other Factors Should You Consider?

Portable ToiletsOSHA also mandates how an employer can regulate the use of public bathrooms and portable restrooms. They prohibit unreasonable restrictions on how employees can use the restrooms. This includes making sure policies, such as those that require employees to sign out door keys, don’t unreasonably delay the use of the facilities. Employees should also have the freedom to leave their job assignments to use the restroom without unreasonable delay.

Although not required by any specific regulations, the placement of portable restrooms should be considered as a matter of courtesy. They should be located in areas that provide privacy and sufficient ventilation. If the portable toilet doesn’t have a sink with soap or hand sanitizer, a hand-washing station should be situated nearby. Restrooms should also be separated by gender to ensure everyone on your staff has fair access to the facilities as needed.
