A chain link fence is an affordable and durable option for enclosing your yard. It’s also fairly low maintenance. In fact, it’s easy to keep your fence looking like new if you tackle a few basic maintenance tasks and keep an eye on its condition.

How Can You Care for a Chain Link Fence?

1. Inspect

Every six to eight weeks, or any time there is a major storm, take a few moments to inspect your fence for damage or brewing trouble. Check the support posts to ensure they are secure in the ground and not leaning and that the links are properly attached to the posts. Check the links themselves, looking for any that are broken or missing. Watch for any loose nails or screws that need tightening, rust spots that might be forming, and make sure that the gate still opens and closes and isn’t off-balance. Spotting problems quickly and addressing them before they lead to bigger damage can keep your fence in good shape.

2. Coat

Small spots can usually be treated with a rust-inhibiting paint, which will be undetectable to most. For larger spots, you’ll need to sand some of the rust off and apply a primer and rust inhibitor before repainting. For better protection from rust, apply a special coating to the fence designed to reduce the effects of moisture.

3. Clean

Inevitably, your chain link fence will collect dirt and debris, which can contribute to scratches and abrasions that will eventually lead to rust. Give your fence a good cleaning every so often; a blast with the garden hose or a power washer is usually adequate for cleaning away normal dirt and grime. For especially dirty areas, scrub away built-up dirt with a soft brush and some mild detergent. If you find mold, use a solution of white vinegar and water to clean it off and keep it from coming back.
