The past few months have been difficult, from trying to remain safe during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensuring children are learning. With school reopening, you want to make sure your child meets their education goals despite these obstacles. Here are a few tips to help your child thrive under the circumstances.

How to Keep Kids Ahead During School

1. Get Organized

The easier it is to find resources, the more confident kids will be in keeping up with their education. Begin with a regular schedule and set aside time for each subject, homework, test prep, tutors, and breaks.

Teach your child how to write notes as they’re working and to jot down questions as they come up. Make sure they can find what they need, from supplies to online tools.

2. Set Up a Work Area

Designate a space for schoolwork. Add a desk, a comfortable chair, and shelves and bins to organize books, notebooks, files, and supplies.

Eliminate distractions like televisions, and avoid clutter that will make it harder to focus and find necessities. Install a whiteboard to write down daily and monthly goals and reminders, and keep up with stationary stock so that you always have paper, pens, sticky notes, and other essentials.

3. Boost Health

Eating well and getting enough rest are vital for success in education and staying focused and productive throughout the day. Make sure your kids are eating nutritious meals and have snack breaks to keep their energy up.

Choose whole grains, lean protein, plenty of fruits and veggies, and lots of water for hydration. Stick to a regular sleep schedule for eight to ten hours of rest per night.

4. Keep Reading

educationReading is an essential skill, and encouraging the habit will help your child become proficient. Motivate them to read whatever they can, especially material beyond their schoolwork and about topics they like.

Offer magazines, comic books, fiction, and nonfiction. Even words on a food package can help them practice their comprehension.

5. Give Space

Allow for downtime to give your child mental rest, and let them play or pick their activity to unwind. Also, put some of the responsibility of their education on their plate, such as managing the order of their homework, planning the schedule, and keeping track of deadlines. Not only will they feel in control, but they’ll also learn important organizational skills and about the consequences of not completing their work.
