Renting a storage unit allows you to remove clutter or downsize your possessions when moving. Whether you want to secure seasonal decor or family heirlooms, you should ensure they remain in perfect condition for when you need them. Below are several strategies for what you should and shouldn’t do when packing a storage unit.

Do:

Leave navigable walkways.

As you place boxes into the storage unit, line them against the walls and leave an open path through the middle. If there’s enough space remaining, you can create an island with additional boxes. However, leave a U-shaped walkway so that you can walk all the way around the unit with ease. If you have many items that require every inch of the space, consider upgrading to a larger unit to ensure ease of access.

Label everything.

storageAdhering a bold label to every single box detailing its contents will allow you to locate what you need easily. As you label each box, make a note of it on a digital or paper document so that you have a comprehensive inventory of everything in your unit. For optimal efficiency, store similar items—like all your holiday decorations—in the same area of the unit.

Don’t:

Save the heaviest items for last.

The bulkiest items—like large pieces of furniture—should go in the unit first. Placing them in the back will eliminate the need to reconfigure the unit whenever you must add something else. Also, stack the heaviest boxes on bottom and the lighter ones on top to prevent crushing delicate items. The fewer bulky items you have to move when accessing the unit, the more use you will get out of it.

Protect items with plastic.

Many companies use plastic wrapping to protect items in shipping, but this is not ideal for long-term storage. This is because it inhibits airflow, locking in moisture and contributing to mold and mildew. Use blankets and pads to protect wooden furniture and musical instruments to prevent scratches. For breakable items—such as dishes and vases—wrap them in paper before boxing them, and fill the spaces in each box with packing foam.
